Our school day rhythm and our yearly calendar prioritizes:
- Family flexibility in daily and year-long scheduling
- Large chunks of time for learning and creating – both indoors and outdoors
- Time and freedom (no homework) to participate in other social activities
- Quality feedback from the teacher through detailed observations and helpful reports. No grades or report cards.
The Skola school year follows a typical school calendar. We always start the school year after Labor Day and end the school year close to Memorial Day. A Skola school year includes 138 school days + 18 J-term days + 10 “Out in Our Community” and Library Days. We prioritize family flexibility and so your family gets to decide how many days to attend, and according to MN homeschool law, there is no minimum requirement. We have built a learning environment with higher quality contact hours than a traditional model and more days focused on authentic learning. It’s the school day – reimagined! Our school day design has your child and family in mind. We believe that time is a gift, and when we give students and teachers the gift of time, learning and community truly become the centerpiece of a great school.

Our school day is unique. We offer chances each day for students to grow independently but also work in multi-age collaborative groups.

J-term includes 18 unique school days of whole group learning. We drop our regular schedule and instead focus on a special project or theme. In the past we’ve put on theater productions, had experts and guest speakers come visit, teach and make stop-motion videos, take extra field trips, and find places to serve the community.

Library Days
We love guiding our students to be great question askers and researchers. And there’s no better setting to practice this than the local library. We want our students to be comfortable in spaces like this – where great questions are encouraged and met with robust resources.
Each Tuesday we take Skola “on wheels” to a community park and local library. It’s a full school day out in our community: playing and learning, meeting new neighbors, and practicing library research skills.
